An Overview Of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is considering one of the leading comprehensive medical schools in the United States. This school offers educational programs for more than 1,500 undergrads, grads and post-grads. Campuses are located in New Brunswick, Piscataway and Camden, NJ. Continuing education courses are also offered for health care professionals.
History of the School
What is presently known as Robert Wood Johnson Medical School was first formed in 1961 under the name Rutgers Medical School. The first sixteen students enrolled in September of 1966 and completed two complete years of instruction before transferring to schools offering four year medical degrees. In 1970, Rutgers joined with the New Jersey Medical School and the New Jersey Dental School to form a four year medical school in order to better serve its students. This new institution was called College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (CMDNJ). In June of 1974, the very first Doctor of Medicine degrees were awarded by CMDNJ to the students who had completed them.
In 1981, CMDNJ was changed to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). In July of 1986, it was renamed UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Since that date, there have been major additions to the campus's research and clinical facilities.
