The University Of Texas Southwestern Medical School
There are currently eight medical schools which are located in the state of Texas. The University of Texas system possesses four of the medical schools, one of which is UT Southwestern Medical School, located in Dallas, Texas. Admissions to this school each year are equal to approximately 230 students. Ninety percent of the applicants admitted are from Texas. This admission rule is required by law to ensure that the state has a adequate number of well qualified medical doctors.
History of the School
In a time of war, in 1943, Southwestern Medical College, now known as the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, was founded. The school was composed of a small collection of abandoned military barracks. However, approximately six years later, in 1949, it was successful enough to be the second medical school recognized in the UT system.
Today, UT Southwestern Medical School has risen from a small wartime school to a hugely prosperous academic institution that is part of a dynamic medical center. It is recognized across the nation for its academic excellence.
Requirements for Admission
The admission requirements for entrance to UT Southwestern Medical School are as follows:
- It is recommended to apply for admission upon successful completion of a bachelor's degree, however admission may be granted upon completion of 90 semester credit hours.
- The following courses must have been completed with a grade of C or better:
- Biology-2 years with a one year lab
- Organic Chemistry-1 year with lab
- Inorganic Chemistry-1 year with lab
- English-1 year
- Math-One semester of statistics based math or college calculus
- Physics-1 year with lab
- Acceptable minimum score on the MCAT
Tuition and Other Costs
Tuition for Texas residents at UT Southwestern Medical School is currently charged at $180 per each semester hour, which equals $21,600 for 120 hours.
Non Texas residents are charged $458 per semester hour, which equals $54, 960 for 120 hours.

Continuing Education
The education of physicians does not stop upon graduating from UT Southwestern Medical School. The faculty of this institution are responsible for the annual training and instruction of over 1,350 clinical residents who have chosen to engage in post-grad specialty and sub-specialty training. The faculty also offer opportunities for continuing medical education.
