In 1976, St Georges University was actually the first private medical school established in the Caribbean. The first class enrolled in the school in 1977, and the first graduating class was awarded their degrees in 1981. Overview of the Four Year Medical Program
The St Georges University Medical Program is completed over the course of four academic years. The first two years include the basic sciences. Students study on the Grenada campus. The following two years focus on the clinical sciences. Students complete their studies at the clinical centers belonging to the university, as well as hospitals in the U.S. and U.K. that are affiliated with St Georges University.
Requirements for Admission
Applicants who are coming from North America can apply for entry into the St Georges University four year medical program as long as they have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution. The following coursework must have been completed within the degree:
- One year of Biology or Zoology (lab included)
- One year of Organic Chemistry (lab included)
- One year Inorganic Chemistry (lab included)
- One semester Math (Statistics, Computer Science or Calculus)
- One semester Physics (lab included)
- One semester English
Physiology, Biochemistry and Microbiology are recommended, but not required as part of an applicant's preparation for medical studies. St Georges University also believes it necessary that applicants of the medical program have basic knowledge in using computers as well.
Applicants from the United Kingdom need to have a bachelor's degree with a strong concentration in science in order to gain direct entry into St Georges University medical program.
Applicants from other countries need to have completed a bachelor's degree with a science and English background. If these requirements are not met, the applicant may apply to enter the pre-medical science program which will last from one to three years before the student is eligible for admission into the St Georges University medical program. Total education time for those who have to attend the pre-medical program before the medical program is approximately five to seven years.
