UCLA Medical School, which is also known as David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is located in Los Angeles, California. Geffen, a media tycoon, donated two hundred million dollars in undesignated funds to the institution in 2001. It is considered as one of the top ranking medical schools in the United States.

 

Brief History of the School

 

UCLA Medical School was originally founded in 1945 when the UC Board of Regents voted to found a medical school that would be an affiliate of UCLA. The construction of the school of medicine began in 1949. The first class of the school was enrolled in 1951 which included 26 men and 2 women. This first class graduated in 1955. Since those early days, the medical school has experienced much growth and progress. Its current rank was reported in 2009, by U.S. News and World Report, as being number eleven in the the United States in research.

 

 Requirements for Admission

 

UCLA Medical School requires that applicants meet the following admission requirements in order to be considered:

 

  • Completed Undergraduate Degree from an accredited college or school (Sometimes an exception is made for those students who have completed three full years of college).
  • Successful MCAT scores 
  • Recommendation letters 
  • Graduate Record, if a Graduate degree has been earned 

 

Required Coursework:

 

  • Chemistry: Two years including inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry with a lab and quantitative analysis
  • Physics: One year with lab
  • Biology: One year with lab
  • Mathematics: One year which includes introductory calculus and statistics
  • English: One year which includes English Composition

 

Recommended Coursework:

  • Spanish
  • Humanities
  • Computer Skills
  • Social Sciences

 

In addition, all students who are accepted to UCLA Medical School are required to have a computer for their personal use.

 

Tuition

 

The cost of tuition for the MD program at UCLA Medical School is approximately $18,854 for applicants who are in California, and  $31,091 for those who reside outside of California.

Over the decades, there have been many notable graduates of the UCLA Medical School. The following is a list of a few of them:
